How to Renew Your Health Insurance

You may need to take action each year to renew your health insurance or the insurance of your family members.

The steps you take to renew your health insurance are different depending on where you originally enrolled:

If you are enrolled through NY State of Health

If you received a notice from NY State of Health letting you know that your annual renewal is due soon for your Medicaid, Child Health Plus, Essential Plan, or Qualified Health Plan coverage, you can complete your renewal in several ways. If you have not received your notice yet, learn more about what you can do to prepare.

Renew Online

You can complete your renewal online by logging into your account at nystateofhealth.ny.gov. When it is time for your renewal, click the “Update Application” button after logging in and follow the instructions to ensure your information is up to date.

Renew With an Enrollment Assistor

Enrollment assistors are experts in your community who are trained to help you find the best health care plan for your needs. Their help is free. If you already have an assistor, contact them so they can help you renew your insurance. If you don’t already have an assistor, you can find one using the assistor search tool.

Renew Over the Phone

You can renew your insurance over the phone by calling the NY State of Health Customer Service Center at
1-855-355-5777 (TTY: 1-800-662-1220). The Customer Service Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

If you are enrolled through your Local Department of Social Services (LDSS) or the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA)

If you received a Medicaid renewal packet from your Local Department of Social Services (LDSS) or the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA), you need to complete and return your renewal packet by your renewal deadline. Follow the instructions and complete your renewal right away.

How to Return Your Completed Renewal Packet

If you are enrolled through your Local Department of Social Services (LDSS)

Complete and return your renewal packet with all requested documents by the specified date on the renewal form. (Do not send original documents.) You can return your completed and signed renewal form along with the required documentation by USPS mail, by fax, uploaded via the NYDocSubmit app, or drop it off in person to your LDSS.

NYDocSubmit enables residents of New York State to submit required documents for Medicaid, SNAP, HEAP, Temporary Assistance – avoiding another trip to the local office.

This App is available to residents of Albany, Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chemung, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Dutchess, Erie, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Madison, Monroe, Montgomery, Niagara, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Orleans, Oswego, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schoharie, Schuyler, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Steuben, Suffolk, Sullivan, Tioga, Tompkins, Ulster, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Westchester, Wyoming, and Yates counties, at this time. If you are enrolled through the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA)

Complete and return your renewal packet with all requested documents by the specified date on the renewal form. (Do not send original documents.) You can return your completed and signed renewal form along with the required documentation by USPS mail, submit it online through Access HRA, or drop it off in person to HRA.

How to Appeal

If you disagree with the renewal decision made by your Local Department of Social Services or the Human Resources Administration, you have 60 days from the date of the decision to ask for a fair hearing using the phone number provided on the Medicaid or Medicare Savings Program notice.
